Blackjack table strategy: When to stand in Blackjack

Before you sit down at a live blackjack table or a virtual one at an online gaming site like WagerWeb.com, you need to know some basic strategy. And there’s nothing more important that knowing when to stand.

To hit at a table means to take another card or cards to your hand you have to try to get as close to or exactly 21. To stand means to take no more cards and play the hand that you have. Some players may closely follow their own strategy thereby taking the least risks. Others will act boldly and ask to be hit when they are showing a 16 for example.

At a blackjack table, the house edge starts around 5.5%, but if you know when to hit and when to stand you can improve your odds by around 3%. Remember that in blackjack you play against the dealer not against the other players as is the case at Texas Hold em poker sites.

Always stand at blackjack table when you have a hand of 17 or more. This excludes soft hands when you are holding an Ace. A hand of 17 or more is considered to be a strong hand. If you have more than 16 the chances that you have to improve your hand are not great enough to risk busting, which is going over 21. This is the case no matter what the dealer is showing. Conversely you can never bust if you have 11 or less than 11, so you should always hit.

When a dealer is showing an ace is the worst scenario on the blackjack table. What you should consider in blackjack is that a card with a value of 10, which are 10, Jack, Queen, and King, is more likely to appear than any other single card value. In this case, the dealer has a blackjack roughly 4/13. Also, the dealer with an Ace has more chances of drawing cards without getting busted. Your approach is to aggressively play the game by trying to get a good hand like a 17 and above, as the dealer is likely to have a strong hand.

What about if the dealer is showing a 10, Jack, Queen, or King at a blackjack table? If the dealer is showing these 10-value cards there is a 1/13 chance they will have 21 and a 4/13 chance they will have a 20. Because of this you should have a strong hand to compete with the dealer. Hit on
16 or less, stand on 17 or more.

When the dealer is showing a 7,8, or 9 at a blackjack table, there is no chance that the dealer will have blackjack, but the dealer has a good chance to have a strong hand of 17 or more. You need a strong hand to compete if they are showing a 7,8, or 9. If you have a 10-value card or an Ace you should hit and may want to double down. Hit on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more.

When the dealer is showing a 4,5, or 6, you are in a good position at a blackjack table, because they have a good chance to bust. You should never bust if the dealer is showing a 4,5,or 6. It is a good idea to double down if you have a 9,10, or 11. Hit on 8 or less and stand on 12 or more.

When the dealer is showing a 3 at a blackjack table, you are still in a good position here, as their chances to bust are still high, but there is a slight advantage to hitting when you have a 12, as the chances of busting are 4/13. You will want to double down if you have a 9,10, or 11. If you have
8 or less hit and stand if you have 13 or more.

Finally, when the dealer is showing a 2, you are still in a good situation at a blackjack table, but the chances of the dealer busting is less likely, as the dealer getting 2 cards that total 20 is only about 10%. Because of this you should hit on 9, not doubling down. If you have 10 or 11 you can
double down and hit on 12 and stand on 13 or more.

Casino News: Las Vegas No. 14 on Drunkest Cities List

Las Vegas, Nevada, you should be ashamed of yourselves. After years of building that “Sin City” rep, years of slogans like “what happens here, stays here”, thousands of drunken weddings, you come in at only No. 14 on the Drunkest City List?

“They obviously didn’t check the desert for passed out partiers while here in Vegas,” Vegas commenter “Sincitywingfan” wrote. “Average drinks in a month = 14? Seriously? That is an average for a night with gamblers.”

Damn straight.

The Daily Beast created the obviously painstaking list by having residents report the average number of alcoholic drinks they consume per month, and reporters considered the percent of the population who are binge or heavy drinkers according to the Centers for Disease Control. When the numbers were added up, Vegas came in at 14.

The company found that the average Las Vegan drank 14.6 adult beverages a month. Though some “Vegans” complained they only averaged that much because of the huge tourism industry in Nevada, while other cities just have a bunch of drunkards. Vegas had nothing on Reno, who ranked fourth, and Boston was the lucky city to rank No. 1 at 15.5 bevies per month. Cheers to Boston!

Does Bovada.lv count as a city? If so we’d like to put in our average during online casino play for analysis.

Record New Year’s Eve Crowd Expected in Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada is still the place to be for New Year’s Eve.

A record 314,000 tourists are expected to celebrate on the Strip and elsewhere Saturday night, paying higher prices at sold-out hotels, packing nightclubs to see the Kardashians, Black Eyed Peas and Stevie Wonder close out 2012. We feel sorry for those who opted to party with the Kardashians over Stevie Wonder.

The one night of liquor and confetti will bring in a boatload of cash for Sin City. An estimated $193 million in gaming revenue is expecting, preparing Vegas for a promising 2012.

2011 was a rebound year for Vegas, the city pulled in 39 million visitors in 2011, close to the 39.2 million peak of 2007.

“While the recovery has been gradual and spending has taken longer to recover, visitor volume has been strong,” said Kevin Bagger, senior director of marketing for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The city expects to fill 98% of its 150,189 rooms on New Year’s Eve, up .4% from last Dec. 31. Unfortunately, the increase in visitors means an increase in prices. Rooms at the Bellagio that rented for $659 to $799 on New Year’s Eve 2010 are going for $1,199 to $1,998 this year, says Yvette Monet, spokeswoman for the Bellagio’s parent company, MGM Resorts International. So we hope you have deep pockets.

Casino News: Mayor Bloomberg Supports Gaming in NYC

Can you believe that despite having a city that never sleeps New York City doesn’t have an active casino industry?
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is looking to change all that.
“Do I support casino gaming at a New York City location? . . . Yes,” he said in a recent interview.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg also supports the idea, as long as the city gets some of the tax revenue of course.

“Whatever he decides to do,” Bloomberg said of the governor, “we’ll be supporting him. I just want to make sure that if there is gambling, some of those revenues do come to New York City. We need the revenues as well, just like every other part of the state.”
What a difference the online world makes. New York is already taking steps toward online betting, state lotteries (of course) were recently given an opening by the Justice Department. America’s canadian brothers are already opening their own online casinos. Though many are having security and technical issues, proving the best bet is from the experienced online sites.
With a online infrastructure on the way it appears the mayor and governor have decided they might as well bring in live gaming too.
Another powerful New York City politician, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, also offered support for a full casino at the Aqueduct Racetrack, already home to a new “racino” featuring slot machines and electronic versions of craps and roulette. So did Brooklyn Assemblyman Karim Camara, the head of the black, Latino, Puerto Rican, and Asian caucus in Albany.
Get ready NYC, one day you’ll be a hotbed for gaming as well.

Casino News: Vegas’ Steady Climb Continues

A couple of years back Las Vegas, Nevada was that guy betting the last five bucks in his bank account on lucky number seven. Today, Sin City is back on a roll.

Vegas saw a 2.7 percent increase in visitation in October compared with the same month a year ago, marking the 20th straight month of growth in tourist numbers.

The higher visitor count comes along with a 10.4 percent year-over-year increase in gambling revenue for Clark County.

What does that mean for bettors? Well, if you were looking to drop some cash in Sin City we suggest you do it soon. As the more Vegas’ revenue rises the more expensive it will become. Right now Vegas is still in the accommodating stage. The average room rate in the city was just $115. The more people visit the more costs will rise.

Though Vegas is no longer the gambling Mecca it used to be, online casinos have taken that mantle, it’s still the best place on Earth for betting, partying and get away with stuff while the wife’s at home.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported that more than 3.4 million people visited in October. The number of convention visitors was up 9.2 percent compared with the same time last year.

The numbers put the city’s visitor count up 4.5 percent for the first ten months this year.

It looks like it’s going to be a good 2012 for Sin City.
