CFL Grey Cup Preview: Lions vs. Bombers Prop Bets

The B.C. Lions are listed as 7-point favorites on the CFL betting lines at the Bodog Sportsbook for Sunday’s Grey Cup, but the wagering opportunities for the league’s championship contest don’t end there.

Just like with the Super Bowl, the Grey Cup betting board is chock full of proposition wagers, including some that will put money into your pocket almost immediately.

The Lions are listed as the -145 favorite to score first on Sunday, something they did against the Edmonton Eskimos in the Western Final last time out – Paul McCallum booted a pair of first-quarter field goals to stake his team to a 6-0 lead.

The Bombers are the +115 underdog on that prop bet, and they gave up the first points of the Eastern Final to Hamilton; the Tiger-Cats kicked a field goal in the first quarter, the only points they managed to score in the 19-3 defeat.

You can also get -200 odds that the team that scores first on Sunday ends up winning the game, while the Lions are at -175 to score the contest’s first 10 points. The Blue Bombers are the +125 underdogs to put the first 10 points of the game on the board, while correctly guessing neither team will score 10 points pays off at +4000 odds.

The Lions and Blue Bombers combined for 30 points in the second quarter of their respective division finals last weekend, and the second quarter is the +125 favorite to be the highest-scoring frame on Sunday. The fourth quarter is next at +200, with the third quarter at +400, and the first quarter the underdog at +700.

Also, correctly picking the game to go into overtime this weekend pays off at +1200.

And if you’re looking for player props for the Grey Cup, the OVER/UNDER on passing yards for Winnipeg quarterback Buck Pierce is at 245.5, and for B.C. quarterback Travis Lulay it’s at 255.5.

Pierce is also at 7/2 CFL odds boards, with Lulay at 2/1 on those CFL lines right now.

Football Betting: Lots at Stake in Final Week of CFL Season

There are no playoff spots on the line in the final games of the Canadian Football League’s regular season this week, but there is playoff positioning at stake as teams take one final shot at the CFL odds at the Bodog Sportsbook before the postseason.

Get all your CFL odds at Bodog.

In the East the 5-12 Toronto Argonauts have been eliminated from playoff contention, and the 8-9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats are locked into third place in those division standings. The Argos will host the Tiger-Cats to kick off Week 19 of the season on Thursday night with little more than pride on the line for the rivals.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Montreal Alouettes then have identical 10-7 records at the top of the East standings, with the team that ends up in first place getting a bye through to the second round of the playoffs. The second-place team in the East will play host to Hamilton in the postseason’s first round next weekend. Winnipeg holds the tiebreaker.

Both the Bombers and the Alouettes play on the road on Saturday night this week as they try to run their win totals to 11; Winnipeg is at Calgary, while Montreal is in B.C.

The Stampeders and Lions also have 10-7 records heading into this week’s action, and the Edmonton Eskimos have that same mark as well. That means all three of those West teams have a shot at first place in the division, and conversely all three of those West teams could end up in third place and have to play on the road next week.

Edmonton might have the easiest path to 11 wins this week, as they get a visit from a Saskatchewan Roughriders team on Friday night that is out of the playoffs at 5-12 on the season. The Lions hold the tiebreaker over both Edmonton and Calgary, and the Eskimos hold the tiebreaker over the Stampeders.

The CFL’s division semifinals and division finals lead into the Grey Cup, which will be played in Vancouver this season on November 27. The Lions are the 9/5 favorite on the CFL futures to win the championship at home, with Montreal at 3/1, Winnipeg at 4/1, both Calgary and Edmonton at 5/1, and Hamilton the longshot on the list at 12/1.

CFL Betting Odds: Lions Host Eskimos in West Division Showdown

The British Columbia Lions had reeled off eight consecutive victories in CFL betting results before getting soundly beaten 42-10 by the snarling Tiger-Cats last week in Hamilton.

This Saturday night (10:00 pm Eastern) we’ll find out whether that lopsided loss was an indicator that the Lions are reverting to their early-season form, or if it was merely a blip on the radar of an otherwise dramatic turnaround by the Lions this season.

The Lions (9-7 SU, 9-7 ATS), who lost six of their first seven games this season before blasting the Eskimos 36-1 in Edmonton back in Week 8 to kick off that impressive eight-game winning streak, will host those same Eskimos (10-6 SU, 9-7 ATS) in the marquee matchup of Week 17.

At stake will be at least a share of first place in the tightly-packed West Division, with the Lions just two points behind the front-running Eskimos with only one more week of regular-season CFL betting action on the schedule next weekend.

Lions QB Travis Lulay has emerged as the second-best passer in the league this year with 4,213 yards passing and 25 touchdowns, ranking behind only Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes. The Lions, who also defeated Edmonton 33-24 in Vancouver at the end of September during their winning streak, will have to slow down the elusive Jerome Massan of the Eskimos, who ranks second among all CFL running backs with 964 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

Also on the Week 18 schedule is an important matchup in Montreal where the Als will play host to Calgary on Sunday afternoon (1:00 pm Eastern), with the Stampeders (9-7 SU, 9-7 ATS) also just two points behind the Eskimos in the West Division, and the Alouettes (10-6 SU, 6-10 ATS) tied with Winnipeg atop the East Division.

The Blue Bombers (10-6 SU, 11-5 ATS) host the Argonauts on Friday night (8:00 pm Eastern), and the Tiger Cats (8-8 SU, 9-7 ATS) visit Saskatchewan on Saturday afternoon (3:00 pm Eastern). Both the Argos and Riders have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

CFL Betting: BC Hosts Edmonton in Battle for First Place

There’s just two weeks left in the CFL season, and we still don’t know who will get the first round byes and home field advantages. In the West Division, Edmonton holds a one-game lead over BC. Those two teams will meet on Saturday night in the most important game of the season for either.

If Edmonton wins, they’ll clinch the division and not have to play in the West Division semifinal, which will go between BC and Calgary, regardless how the last week of the season finishes. The Eskimos have 6/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

If BC wins, they’ll tie themselves up with Edmonton, and take the season series three games to one. That will place even more importance on the final game for both teams. The Lions have 7/4 Grey Cup odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.

In head-to-head games, BC has outscored Edmonton 86-58, including a 36-1 beating on Aug. 19, which ended up being the first of eight wins in a row for the Lions; a streak that ended last week against Hamilton.

BC’s Travis Lulay and Edmonton’s Ricky Ray have been two of the league’s best quarterbacks this year, and they’ll both be counted on to drive their respective teams to victory on Saturday.

Now in his third CFL seeason, Lulay has shown improvement in each campaign. This year, he’s totaled 4,213 passing yards and 25 touchdowns. His 1.7 pass interception percentage and 92.7 rating are both career bests at this point.

Ray is in his ninth season in the CFL, and he’s been the guy everybody’s expected him to be. He’s thrown for 3,979 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Can Edmonton clinch the division, or will BC force a tie going into the final week of the season?

CFL Betting Odds: Milestones in Sight for BC and Hamilton

With the CFL playoff picture all-but-decided with three weeks to go, the BC Lions and Hamilton Tiger-Cats face off in a CFL betting game at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

BC has been the exception in a CFL season marred by parity. After staring 0-5, the Lions have gone 9-1 and are on an eight-game winning streak. BC’s last loss came on August 13 against Winnipeg. The Lions have 3/2 Grey Cup odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.

The Ti-Cats were the last team to clinch a playoff spot. They’re currently third in the East Division, but cannot overtake division-leading Montreal in the standings. Those two teams are tied 2-2 in the season series, but the Als have a one-point advantage in point differential. The best Hamilton can hope for is home field advantage in the divisional semifinal. The Tiger-Cats have 10/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

In their only other meeting this season, Hamilton edged BC 39-31. Hamilton rookie WR Chris Williams caught a season-high eight passes for 189 receiving yards and a touchdown. He’s been a favorite target for QB Kevin Glenn as he leads all Tiger-Cats receivers with 1,012 yards.

Lions’ WR Geroy Simon is third on the all-time receiving yards list, six back of Allen Pitts and 268 behind Milt Stegall. Teammate and former Ti-Cat WR Arland Bruce is just shy of becoming the 14th CFL player to reach 10,000 in his CFL career.

Can Hamilton steal home field advantage for the first game of the playoffs? How many milestones will BC reach on Saturday?

CFL Betting: Bombers Host Als in Critical East Showdown

The CFL playoff teams have been decided. Now it’s just a matter of figuring out who will play who in the divisional semifinals. One CFL betting game on Saturday that has huge playoff implications features the Montreal Alouettes and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Canad Inns Stadium.

Montreal currently sits atop the East Division standings and has one four games in a row. A win on Sunday will guarantee that the two-time defending Grey Cup champions clinch the division title as well as a first-round playoff bye. The Als have 5/2 odds of winning another Grey Cup.

A Blue Bomber victory will tie them in the East standings and give them the tiebreaker advantage should the two remain knotted by the end of the season as Winnipeg and Montreal have split the season series so far, with the Bombers winning 25-23 on Sept. 18 and Montreal taking the next match 32-26 on Sept. 30. Winnipeg has 3/1 Grey Cup odds.

Montreal QB Anthony Calvillo has been just as impressive this season as his numbers would indicate. He already broke the all-time pro football passing record two weeks ago against Toronto. This season, he’s only thrown five interceptions in 557 attempts, or one every 111 passes.

Winnipeg QB Buck Pierce is having a career year himself. The seven-year CFL veteran has already broken personal markers by throwing for 3,062 yards, a longest pass of 92 yards, and (unfortunately) 16 interceptions. His 13 touchdowns are six off his career best.

Can Montreal clinch their division, or will Winnipeg make things interesting going into the final stretch?

CFL Betting: Alouettes Battle Bombers for Eastern Supremacy

The Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers are two teams heading in opposite directions as they prepare to battle for first place in the East Division in Week 17 CFL betting action this Saturday afternoon.

The Alouettes (10-5 SU, 6-9 ATS) have won four games in a row and currently lead the Bombers by two points atop the division after defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 27-25 last Sunday in Montreal. Ageless QB Anthony Calvillo threw for 341 yards and a pair of touchdowns with zero interceptions as the Als racked up 445 yards of total offense in the victory. Jamel Richardson had nine receptions for 107 yards and Brandon Whitaker rushed for 79 yards on 15 carries.

After winning seven of its first eight games to open the season, Winnipeg (9-6 SU, 10-5 ATS) has only managed two victories in its past seven games after losing 24-10 in Edmonton last week. The Bombers have split their previous two matchups against the Alouettes this year, losing 32-26 at home on September 30 and winning 25-23 in Montreal on September 18.

The rest of the Week 17 slate in CFL betting action includes the Edmonton Eskimos (9-6 SU, 8-7 ATS) visiting Toronto (4-11 SU, 7-8 ATS) to take on the last-place Argonauts, and the equally inept Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-11 SU, 4-11 ATS) travelling to Calgary (8-7 SU, 8-7 ATS) to battle the Stampeders in a pair of Friday night games. Both Toronto and Saskatchewan have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Finally, the red-hot British Columbia Lions (9-6 SU, 9-6 ATS) – winners of eight games in a row and tied for first place in the West division with Edmonton – pay a visit to Hamilton (7-8 SU, 8-7 ATS) to face the Tiger-Cats on Saturday night.

CFL Betting: Lions Going for Seven-Straight in Game Against Stampeders

There’s no CFL team hotter than the BC Lions right now, who take their six-game winning streak into their CFL betting game against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night. With only five games left in the regular season, each one has bigger postseason implications than the one before.

Calgary and BC are first and second, respectively in the West Division. After starting off the season at 1-6, the Lions now actually have a chance to move into a tie for first place. BC has 7/2 >Grey Cup odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.

Calgary was on a two-game losing streak before crushing Saskatchewan 40-3 last week. Running back Jon Cornish rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns in the game, on his way to being voted September’s top Canadian in the CFL. The Stampeders have 4/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

These clubs split their first two meetings this season, so the winner of Saturday’s game will give that team the tiebreaker advantage.

Quarterbacks Henry Burris of Calgary and Travis Lulay of BC have been strikingly similar this season. Burris has gone 260-for-412 with 3,429 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while Lulay has completed 250 of 425 attempts for 3,456 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Both have three rushing touchdowns, Burris on 39 attempts; Lulay on 36.

By the end of Week 14, we may even have a three-way tie in the West, as the Edmonton Eskimos are also at 7-6, and they take on the 4-9 Saskatchewan Roughriders on Monday.

CFL Betting Odds: Fantuz Out as Struggling Stampeders Battle Racking Roughriders

After back-to-back appearances in the Grey Cup, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are in the unenviable last place position in the West Division. Six points ahead of them are the Calgary Stampeders. These two teams will go at it on Saturday in a CFL betting game with huge implications for both.

The Stampeders are tied with the Eskimos for the division lead with a 7-5 record. Henry Burris is one of three quarterbacks to throw for more than 3,000 yards this season. His primary target has been Nik Lewis, who has 896 receiving yards but just four touchdowns. Calgary has 5/1 Grey Cup odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.

Meanwhile, the Riders are four points behind the Lions with only six games left in the regular season. If Saskatchewan wants to compete for the playoffs, they’ll need QB Darian Durant to string together some wins soon. However, they’ll be without slotback Andy Fantuz again this week. They have 12/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

These teams have met twice this season already, with two more to go. In their first game on July 30, Calgary took a 22-18 win in a game where Saskatchewan had trouble moving the ball. On August 12, Calgary was on the right side of a 45-35 score, which was highlighted by an interception by Calgary’s Keon Raymond, which he returned 117 yards for a touchdown – the fourth-longest return in CFL history.

Both teams are currently on losing streaks. Saskatchewan has had trouble on the road this year, as they’ve only won two of five games. Worse though, is the fact that they’re winless in five games against opponents from their own division. Calgary, on the other hand, is 2-4 at home this season. Something has to give.

CFL Betting Odds: Als and Bombers Battle for East Division Lead

The final third of the CFL season begins Friday night with a CFL betting game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Montreal Alouettes, who sit one-two in the East Division, separated by two points. A first-round playoff bye is on the line as these two teams battle for top spot.

Despite having the CFL’s best record at 8-4, the Bombers have won just one of their last four games, that win being a 25-23 decision over the Als. Winnipeg has 9/2 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

After starting the year 3-0, Montreal has fallen back to earth with a 7-4 record, but they can still boast of the best offense in the league considering that they haven’t scored less than 21 points in a game. They have 3/1 Grey Cup odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.

Montreal is led by QB Anthony Calvillo, who has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 3,628 yards, 25 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His top target is SB Jamel Richardson, who is the only receiver in quadruple digits for receiving yards with 1,192 on 77 receptions, despite his longest only being 48 yards. He’s caught nine touchdowns so far.

Opposing them is Winnipeg QB Buck Pierce, who has been significantly less impressive than Calvillo. He’s only thrown 2,680 yards and has 13 interceptions to just 12 touchdown passes. He took a hit on his already-bruised ribs last week against Toronto which may see him sit out of Friday’s game in favour of backup QB Alex Brink.

Can the Als get the win and tie up the two teams in the East, or will the Bombers give themselves some more breathing room atop the standings?
