CFL Betting Odds: Eskimos lie in wait for Alouettes

The Montreal Alouettes suffered a tough loss at home last week, while the Edmonton Eskimos went on the road and won in a romp. Now the Als have to go on the road to Edmonton, and the Eskimos will have all the comforts of home in their favor as Week 13 of CFL betting action gets underway Friday night (9:00 pm Eastern) at Commonwealth Stadium.

Edmonton QB Ricky Ray was sharp as a tack in last week’s 38-23 win at Hamilton, as he completed 25-of-32 passing attempts for 227 yards and a touchdown. Slotback Fred Stamps hauled in 11 catches for 130 yards, while RB Jerome Massan scored twice and racked up 139 rushing yards on just 15 carries.

The Alouettes dropped a tight 25-23 decision at home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, as QB Anthony Calvillo had a rare tough day at the office. Calvillo completed just 22 of his 39 throws for 258 yards, while RB Brandon Whitaker – the league’s leading rusher – was held to just 51 yards on eight carries.

Edmonton is tied for first place in the West Division with Calgary at 7-4 (6-5 ATS), while Montreal sits second in the East Division at 6-5 (5-6 ATS). The Alouettes have won the past three games between these two teams, including a 27-4 win in Montreal back on August 11.

The rest of the Week 13 slate in CFL betting action includes the surging British Columbia Lions visiting Saskatchewan to take on the red-hot Roughriders on Saturday afternoon (4:00 pm), and the woeful Toronto Argonauts playing host to the first-place Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night (7:00 pm).

The week then concludes with the annual Touchdown Atlantic matchup in Moncton, New Brunswick, where the Calgary Stampeders will be designated the visiting team as they take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday afternoon (1:00 pm).

CFL Betting Odds: Riders Host Lions in Battle of CFL’s Hottest

Saturday features a clash of the two hottest football teams in a CFL betting game that pits the BC Lions against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Taylor Field.

BC has won its last four games – three of which were road victories. They haven’t allowed more than 19 points and haven’t won by less than 13 during that stretch. The Lions have 5/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

Almost as impressive is Saskatchewan’s three-game streak, during which they beat Winnipeg twice to give the Blue Bombers two of their three losses this season. The Roughriders also have 5/1 Grey Cup odds at the Bodog Sportsbook.

On paper, these teams look pretty even. Lions QB Travis Lulay is third in the CFL in passing yards with 2,865 while Riders QB Darian Durant is fourth with 2,785. Linebackers Solomon Elimimian of BC and Jerrell Freeman of Saskatchewan have 66 and 63 tackles, respectively, which are one-two in the league. And Lion SB Geroy Simon has 846 rushing yards compared to Roughrider Weston Dressler, who has 778.

Saskatchewan’s star slotback Andy Fantuz injured his ankle in Sunday’s win against Toronto and is day-to-day. If he can’t go on Saturday, former Lion Jason Clermont will likely replace him on the roster.

This game has some serious playoff implications. With only seven games left on the schedule, wins are more important than ever. As it stands now, the Roughriders aren’t in a playoff position, but they are only two points back. However, in their previous meeting, the Lions won 24-11, so if BC wins either of their final two games against Saskatchewan, they’ll have that tiebreaker in their favor should these two teams be tied in points by season’s end.

CFL Betting Odds: Bombers look to snap skid

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have gone from swaggering to staggering as they head for hostile territory in Montreal to take on the Alouettes in the marquee game this weekend in Week 12 CFL betting action.

After winning seven of their first eight games this season, the Bombers have lost two games in a row to the lowly Saskatchewan Roughriders and were outscored 72-30 in the process. QB Buck Pierce has been battered all season long and remains questionable to face the Alouettes this Sunday (1:00 pm Eastern) after suffering a vicious hit that sent his helmet flying off his head last week against the Riders. Backup Alex Brink will start if Pierce is unable to go.

The Alouettes are coming off a 43-13 rout of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week and sit just two points behind the first-place Blue Bombers in the CFL’s East Division standings. QB Anthony Calvillo threw for 421 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s victory.

In other Week 12 matchups, the Tiger-Cats will play host to the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday night, the rejuvenated Roughriders welcome the woefully inept Toronto Argonauts to Saskatchewan on Saturday afternoon, and the surging British Columbia Lions invade Calgary to take on the Stampeders on Saturday night.

The Alouettes have moved to the top of the ladder on the updated CFL futures chart at 3/1 odds to win the Grey Cup, with the Stampeders listed second at 10/3 and the Blue Bombers at 9/2. The Eskimos, Lions, and Roughriders are all at 13/2, with the Tiger-Cats at 7/1 and the Argos bringing up the rear at a distant 100/1 odds.

CFL Betting Odds: Saskatchewan Hosts Toronto in Basement Battle

This week features a battle of two last-place teams in a CFL betting game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Taylor Field.

Saskatchewan QB Darian Durant has thrown seven touchdowns in his last two games against just one interception. Four of those touchdown passes went to Chris Getzlaf who amazingly only has four catches in those two games. If Toronto wants a chance at winning this Saturday, they’ll have to shut down the passing game. Saskatchewan’s Grey Cup odds are set at 13/2 at the Bodog Sportsbook.

Toronto re-introduced QB Steven Jyles to the CFL against BC last week. Jyles went 18-33 for 220 yards. He did not throw an interception, but he also didn’t record a touchdown. Toronto also has one of the CFL’s best running backs in Cory Boyd who is sixth in the league with 379 rushing yards, despite only having played six games this season. Toronto has 100/1 odds to win the Grey Cup.

The only other game between these two was on Aug. 18 in Toronto when the Argos edged the Riders 24-18; a game in which Toronto barely held onto a 20-point lead. None of the five victories shared by these two squads have come in division games. Toronto’s only other win came against Calgary on Canada Day.

This game does have some importance, even though both teams are in last place in their respective divisions. Essentially, thanks to the CFL crossover rule, both are chasing the BC Lions, who are 4-6. The Lions are on the road in Calgary this weekend, so a major opportunity to gain ground exists for Toronto and Saskatchewan.

CFL Betting Odds: Lions Host Argos on Heels of Cleo Lemon Release

The BC Lions host the Toronto Argonauts on the CFL betting board in a rematch from last week’s Lions victory in Toronto. The Lions have won two in a row and need to keep applying the pressure to stay ahead of the Roughriders in the West Division.

The Week 10 loss prompted the release of Toronto QB Cleo Lemon, who finishes his career with the Argos with an 11-14 record. The Boatmen currently have 55/1 Grey Cup odds.

Lions QB Travis Lulay went 25-for-36 and had 309 passing yards, one TD and a rushing score of his own. His BC squad has 5/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup.

The Argonauts beat themselves last week when they dropped three passes from Lemon without any defensive presence. Then when backup Dalton Bell came in to start the second half, he served up two easy pickoffs on his first two pass attempts, and it was all downhill from there.

Lemon was given every chance to succeed, regardless of the calibre of players he was surrounded by. The truth was that he just couldn’t handle the assignment. We probably haven’t heard the last of Cleo Lemon in the CFL, but odds are he won’t be starting games anytime soon.

Instead, newly-appointed starter Steven Jyles will make the calls this Saturday when Toronto visits BC.

The Lions, despite their 3-6 record, haven’t lost since Aug. 8, and facing the depleted Argos bodes well for them. Toronto’s 2-7 record puts them last in the East, but they’re far from out of it. A win against BC and a strong second-half could just get them ahead of the Lions and into the playoffs via the CFL’s crossover rule.

CFL Betting Odds: Eskimos and Stampeders Tied for Top Spot in West

Labour Day weekend saw a host of upset victories where in three out of four games, the team with the worse record won. In fact, the four winning teams outscored their opponents 135-51 overall. The unpredictability made for a number of surprises on the CFL betting board.

This week holds the second end of a full home-and-home schedule, so each team has a chance at redemption. But no game means more than the one featuring the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Eskimos who, thanks to Edmonton’s 35-7 victory on Monday, are now tied for the top spot in the West Division.

Edmonton’s Ricky Ray threw for two touchdowns and had 131 passing yards. The Eskimos also used a balanced attack to take down what was the CFL’s hottest team. Jerome Messam led all rushers with just 51 yards. He was one of seven Edmonton players to record rushing yards, including backup QB Kerry Joseph, who had a touchdown in two rushes.

Calgary QB Henry Burris had four turnovers and was sacked three times by Edmonton. This result is coming after being the CFL’s offensive player of the month in August. The Stampeders will have to wipe away this loss quickly, as they and Edmonton hook up again this Friday at Commonwealth Stadium.

Monday’s win means Edmonton now holds the tie-breaker if these two teams finish with identical records as they’ve won both meetings so far between the two teams. If Calgary wants to get the first-round bye in the playoffs, they’ll have to win more games than Edmonton, and a “W” on Friday can go a long way towards ensuring that happens.

CFL Betting Odds: Slumping Eskies skid into Calgary

Henry Burris and the red-hot Calgary Stampeders welcome the ice-cold Edmonton Eskimos to McMahon Stadium on Monday afternoon (4:30 pm Eastern) as the Week 10 CFL betting slate concludes with a key Western Conference matchup.

Calgary sits in first place with a 6-2 record (5-3 ATS), just two points ahead of Edmonton which has compiled a slate of 5-3 (4-4 ATS). The Stampeders have won four games in a row since losing to Edmonton 24-19 back on July 23.

Meanwhile the Eskimos have hit the skids since opening the season with five consecutive wins, losing in succession to Winnipeg, Montreal and British Columbia in their three most recent games while being outscored by a total of 91-21 in those matchups.

The Stamps are huge 9-point favorites to continue their winning ways at home on Monday, and have ascended to the top of the CFL futures ladder to win the Grey Cup at 9/4 odds. Burris has thrown for 2,462 yards in eight games so far this season with 13 touchdowns, five interceptions and a QB rating of 96.9.

Eskimos pivot Ricky Ray hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass since the first quarter of Edmonton’s 28-16 loss to the Blue Bombers back on August 5, and was picked off three times in a 36-1 loss to the Lions in Week 8.

This game will be the first leg of back-to-back matchups between these two bitter rivals. Prior to Edmonton’s win over Calgary back in Week 4, the Stamps had won the previous seven games between these teams dating back to September 2009.

The Stampeders are 7-3 ATS in the past 10 clashes with the Eskimos in Calgary.

CFL Betting Odds: Canadian Football at its Finest Over Holiday Weekend

Labour Day Weekend marks the halfway point of the CFL season, and after two weeks in a row of half-full schedules, all eight teams are in action, but all eyes will be on Monday’s double-header when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats host the Montreal Alouettes, followed by the Edmonton Eskimos visiting the Calgary Stampeders.

The early game features the East Division rivals, who are currently second and third, separated by two points. Montreal’s Sean Whyte has converted 22-straight field goals and is six short of the CFL record set in 1993. He leads the CFL with 95 kicking points this season. Anthony Calvillo will be back in action too, despite suffering an eye injury in last week’s loss to Calgary. The Bodog Sportsbook has set Montreal’s Grey Cup odds at 5/2 while Hamilton’s odds are 13/2.

Calgary and Edmonton kick off right after. These two are battling for a first-round bye in the playoffs as they’re one-two in the West, split by two points as well. Calgary’s on a four-game win streak while the Eskimos have dropped their last three after winning their first five.

The Eskimos have been plagued by injuries. Receivers Fred Stamps, Jason Barnes, Adarius Bowman and Marcus Henry are all sidelined, as is DE Greg Peach and C Aaron Fiacconi. Meanwhile, Calgary’s rookie receiver Anthony Parker hopes to make an impact in his first Labour Day Classic. The Bodog Sportsbook has given Calgary a CFL-best 9/4 odds of winning the Grey Cup. Edmonton has 5/1 odds.

Both games are the firsts of home-and-home sets. In Hamilton and Montreal’s case, these games could go a long way to determining who gets home field advantage in a division semi-final, while Edmonton and Calgary are battling for a first-round playoff bye.

CFL Football Betting Odds: Week 8 Preview

Four teams coming off losses will match up on Thursday and Friday nights as the CFL betting schedule offers up a reduced slate of just two games for Week 8.

First up on Thursday is Saskatchewan at Toronto. The Roughriders were beaten 45-35 at home by Calgary last week while the Argonauts lost 37-32 in Hamilton.

The odds makers at the Bodog Sportsbook have the Argonauts listed as the three-point home favourites on the CFL lines for this matchup, and they’ve done a slightly better job against the spread this season than the Riders. Toronto sits at 3-4 ATS heading into this matchup, while the Riders are 1-6 ATS.

Those teams, though, have been equally bad overall, both winning just one of their first seven games of the season. Saskatchewan at least only rides a three-game losing streak into Thursday’s meeting; Toronto hasn’t won since their season opener.

On Friday night it’s BC at Edmonton, with the visiting Lions the third CFL club sporting an ugly 1-6 mark (2-5 ATS) on the season. The Eskimos are 5-2 through their first seven games of the season, but has lost each of the last two contests.

That second straight loss came last week in Montreal, with the Eskimos’ offense slumbering through a 27-4 defeat. The Lions were embarrassed by the Blue Bombers at home last week, losing 30-17.

The Alouettes remain the favorites at 9/4 on the Bodog Sportsbook’s Grey Cup odds heading into Week 8, followed by the Stampeders at 5/2, the Blue Bombers at 4/1, and both the Eskimos and the Tiger-Cats at 11/2.

The Lions (14/1), Roughriders (20/1) and Argonauts (35/1) round out the list. Head over to the Bodog Sportsbook for updated CFL odds and Grey Cup futures.

CFL Betting Odds: Blue Bombers Defense Tops in CFL

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have more wins in the 2011 season than they did in all of 2010, and they owe it to an impressive defense that is taking the eight-team CFL league by storm. To most people, the 5-1 Blue Bombers are simply just Winnipeg, the East Division leaders, but to themselves? Swaggerville.

The self-proclaimed moniker is fitting, considering that its the energy and confidence of the young squad that has helped them limit their opponents to just 113 points through six games. The next most effective defense, West-leading Edmonton, has given up 127.

It may not be enough to solidify them as favorites when it comes to CFL betting – in fact the Bodog Sportsbook lists them at just 7/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup – but it’s a significant improvement over the 4-11 that the team crawled away with after last season.

Now with a game up on the two-time defending champion Montreal Alouettes, the Blue Bombers are charged with the task of hanging on to their top spot. The two teams don’t play against each other until Sept. 18.

Until then, fans looking to bet on the CFL can considering playing Winnipeg as they embark on a handful of winnable games starting this weekend in B.C. The game will be a rematch of a Week 4 showdown that saw the Blue Bombers walk away with a 25-20 victory.

Winnipeg’s sole loss of the season has come at the hands of the Calgary Stampeders, and even then by only one point.

If quarterback Buck Pierce can keep putting points on the board offensively, the Blue Bombers defense should continue to exude swagger and, more importantly, make noise in the standings.
