THE STORY:
Struggling UConn needs another strong game from freshman center Andre Drummond and junior Alex Oriakhi against undersized Marquette, which has been without 6-foot-11 center Chris Otule (torn ACL) for most of the season. The Golden Eagles will spread the Huskies out with a 4-out, 1-in motion offense to take advantage of UConn’s porous perimeter defense. The Golden Eagles lead the Big East in assists (17.5) and are second in scoring (76.7). The roles are reversed from last season when it was Buzz Williams’ team that needed a quality win to boost its NCAA Tournament chances. Darius Johnson-Odom scored nine of his 17 points in overtime and Marquette left Hartford with a 74-67 win over then-No. 14 UConn. Oriahki had 12 points and 15 rebounds.

TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN 3

ABOUT MARQUETTE (21-5, 10-3 Big East): The Golden Eagles have won nine of 10 by using their helter-skelter style to wreak havoc on opponents. Marquette, which is third in the Big East in steals (8.8), scored 25 points off 14 turnovers in Saturday’s win 95-78 win over Cincinnati. Six players average at least six points, but the main offensive threat is Johnson-Odom. The senior guard is the conference’s second-leading scorer (18.4 points) and its second-best 3-point shooter (39.7). The Golden Eagles’ biggest weakness is the frontcourt. Aside from Otule’s absence, Davante Gardner – the team’s next tallest player at 6-foot-8 – has missed the last four games with a knee injury. He hopes to return for this contest.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (16-9, 6-7 Big East): The Huskies had lost six of seven before Wednesday’s 80-54 rout of lowly DePaul. While it came against one of the league’s doormats, there were a lot of positives to take away from the much-needed win. UConn, which had been shooting just over 38 percent in the previous seven games, hit 63 percent of its attempts in the second half. Drummond (15 points, nine rebounds) and Oriakhi (14 points, 10 rebounds) had their best games together. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Jeremy Lamb found his stroke (8 of 13) after shooting just 31 percent over the last four games. In addition, Shabazz Napier had 11 assists, giving him 18 in the past two games.

TIP -NS: CLICK HERE for 500 Handicappers Package FOR 5$

1. UConn Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, who has missed four straight games, will miss at least the next two contests while receiving treatment for his spinal stenosis. The Huskies were also without Calhoun against Marquette last season (due to the death of his sister-in-law).

2. Connecticut is second in the Big East in field goal defense (38.0) and third in rebounding (38.4), but struggles to defend the 3-point line (34.8 – 15th).

3. “We can’t win any other way than our defense helping our offense.” – Williams, on the Golden Eagles’ recipe for success.

NCAA College Basketball Lines: Cincinnati Bearcats against the Marquette Golden Eagles

Cincinnati at Marquette

THE STORY: Marquette looks to remain one step ahead in a crowded race for second in the Big East as six teams, including Cincinnati, are within one game of one other in the loss column. The Golden Eagles, who have won eight of their last nine, rank second in the league in scoring and first in assists. The Bearcats, meanwhile, are third in the conference in scoring defense. Both teams take excellent care of the ball: Cincinnati and Marquette are second and third in the Big East, respectively, in turnover margin.

TV: 3 p.m. ESPNU

ABOUT CINCINNATI (17-7, 7-4 Big East):
The Bearcats beat struggling DePaul and St. John’s last week to snap a three-game losing streak. Cincinnati has been led by a defense that has allowed just 60.1 ppg, but its uneven offense has been a bit too reliant on the outside shot, firing up a league-high 516 3-point shots this season. Those shots have been falling on most nights — Cincinnati shoots 36.2 percent from long range — but the team is often doomed when they aren’t. The Bearcats have scored 55 or fewer points in five of their seven losses.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (20-5, 9-3 Big East): The Golden Eagles have been getting by despite knee injuries to their top two centers. Senior starter Chris Otule is out for the year, and sophomore Davante Gardner remains doubtful after missing the last three games. Marquette remains potent offensively, led by the outside-inside combo of SG Darius Johnson-Odom (18.2 ppg) and senior F Jae Crowder (16.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 2.3 spg). Marquette is extremely disciplined for an up-tempo club, ranking near the top of the Big East in turnover margin (plus-4.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3) while dishing out a league-high 17.4 assists.

TIP-INS:  CLICK HERE for 5$ Handicappers Package

1. Cincinnati leads the all-time series 25-18, including a 67-60 victory in Milwaukee on March 2 last year.

2. The road team has won three of the last four meetings, with the Golden Eagles’ 84-50 home win in 2009 the lone exception. The Bearcats are 3-1 in their last four games at Marquette.

3. Saturday’s game coincides with the celebration of National Marquette Day, with all fans in attendance encouraged to wear gold. The contest is expected to sell out.

Marquette Golden Eagles against DePaul Blue Demons on Monday: NCAA Basketball Lines

Marquette at DePaul
When: 9:00 PM ET, Monday, February 6, 2012
Where: Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Illinois

CLICK here to Place your College Basketball bets at Bovada

THE STORY: Still smarting from Saturday’s 76-59 setback at Notre Dame, No. 15 Marquette wraps up its brief Midwestern road trip when it travels to Chicago for a Monday night clash with rival DePaul. The Golden Eagles had won seven Big East games in a row before falling to the Fighting Irish, who made 11 3-point shots. The Blue Demons, meanwhile, fell into a tie for last place in the conference after a 74-66 defeat at Cincinnati.

TV: 9 p.m.; ESPNU, ESPN3.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (19-5, 4-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles, who rank second in the conference in scoring (75.4 ppg), are led by the outside-inside combo of shooting guard Darius Johnson-Odom (18.0 ppg) and senior forward Jae Crowder (16.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.3 spg). Marquette is extremely disciplined considering its fast pace, ranking near the top of the Big East in turnover margin (plus-4.0) and assist-turnover ratio (1.3) while dishing out a league-high 17.4 assists. Sophomore power forward Davante Gardner, who has missed the last two games with a sprained left knee, is unlikely to suit up for the Golden Eagles Monday.

ABOUT DEPAUL (11-11, 2-8 Big East): The young Blue Demons rank third in the league in scoring (74.5) but have been giving up far too much at the other end, ranking last in points allowed (75.1) and rebounding margin (minus-6.6) while allowing opponents to shoot 48 percent, easily the worst figure in the conference. DePaul has remained competitive thanks to the dynamic sophomore tandem of forward Cleveland Melvin (18.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and guard Brandon Young (15.5 ppg, 5.0 apg). Only Cincinnati has attempted more 3-pointers among Big East teams than DePaul’s 478.

TIP-INS: CLICK HERE for 5$ Handicappers Package

1. Marquette leads the all-time series, 66-44, with victories in the last two meetings and five of the last six. The Golden Eagles won, 94-64, at home on Jan. 18, 2011.

2. The Blue Demons were victorious the last time the two schools played in Chicago, eking out a 51-50 triumph on Jan. 20, 2010.

3. The 110 previous meetings between the two teams are the most for DePaul against any opponent.

NCAA Basketball Lines: Marquette Golden Eagles against Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Marquette at Notre Dame
When: 1:00 PM ET, Saturday, February 4, 2012
Where: Joyce Center, South Bend, Indiana

CLICK here to Place your College Basketball bets at Bovada

THE STORY: Two hot teams collide when Notre Dame brings its three-game winning streak back home to host No. 15 Marquette, which has won seven straight. The Fighting Irish are currently in fourth place in the conference, while Marquette is second. On paper it looks like a battle between Marquette’s prolific offense (76.1 points) against Notre Dame’s defense, which leads the Big East by allowing only 58.2 points. Notre Dame has limited its last three Big East opponents to only 49.3 points. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 79-36, but Marquette leads the series 6-4 since joining the Big East. The teams split two meetings last year.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT MARQUETTE (19-4, 8-2 Big East): Improved defense has been crucial during the current winning streak, as the Golden Eagles are holding opponents to just 39.8 percent from the floor. Otherwise the team’s shooting percentages are similar, slightly higher on 3-pointers, but slightly lower on all field goals. Jae Crowder (16.6 points, 7.6 rebounds) has had two straight double-doubles and has seven this season. Crowder is also 21st in the nation with 2.3 steals per game. Darius Johnson-Odom (18.3 points, 3.6 rebounds) was named Big East Player of the Week after averaging 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two wins. Davante Gardner (9.8 points 5.4 rebounds) remains questionable with a left knee injury; he didn’t play against Seton Hall.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (14-8, 6-3 Big East): The Irish continue to slow the game down and spread the scoring chores around, with three players averaging double figures: Eric Atkins (12.9), Jerian Grant (12.7) and Jack Cooley (10.7). The balance became especially necessary when Tim Abromaitis was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Atkins averaged 13.5 points in two games with Marquette last season. Grant has 17 double-figure games and has led the team in scoring five times. Seven different players have led the team in scoring. Cooley, who also average 8.4 rebounds, leads the league with six double-doubles and is third in the conference with a 59.4 shooting percentage. Three Irish players are playing more than 35 minutes per game in conference play.

TIP-INS: CLICK HERE for 5$ Handicappers Package
1. Notre Dame has a plus-4.6 rebounding margin in its 14 wins and has been outrebounded by an 8.7 margin in their eight losses.
2. A win would give Marquette 20 wins for the seventh straight season.
3. Notre Dame is 95-7 over its last 102 home games.

THE STORY: The Big East has begun to put the teams at the top through the ringer, with some failing to live up to the lofty preseason billing. While Louisville, Connecticut, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh struggle to stay in the rankings, No. 15 Marquette is cruising right through its Big East slate. The Golden Eagles, who sit in second in the conference, got their bumps out of the way early and have only one currently-ranked team left on the schedule – No. 14 Georgetown in the regular season finale. Ready to stand in the way is Seton Hall, which visits the Golden Eagles on Tuesday. The Pirates looked like contenders in the conference until the last two weeks, when they have dropped four in a row while struggling offensively.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, SNY, Sports 32, Big East Network

ABOUT SETON HALL (15-6, 4-5 Big East): The Pirates were a surprise of the first two months, knocking off then-No.8 Connecticut and opening the Big East 4-1. Jordan Theodore, Herb Pope and Fuquan Edwin gave the team a trio of dynamic offensive threats that opponents were struggling to stop. That has all changed over the past four games, as Seton Hall has slumped to an average of 56 points. The Pirates made their way into the national rankings for the first time in 11 years after starting 15-2 but have shot under 30 percent from the field in the last two games and are beginning a stretch of three straight on the road.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (18-4, 7-2): Just when it looked like the Golden Eagles were going to have their winning streak snapped, they recovered from an 18-point deficit to take out Villanova on Saturday – their sixth straight victory. Marquette lost at the Pirates, 85-72, in the regular season finale last season. Jae Crowder was held to one point on 0-of-2 shooting while Darius Johnson-Odom struggled to 13 on 5-of-16 shooting in that contest. Those two are combining to average 34.9 points in 2011-12.

TIP-INS: CLICK HERE for 5$ Handicappers Package

1. Pope needs four points to become the 39th Seton Hall player to reach 1,000 for his career.

2. The Golden Eagles have taken eight of the last nine in the series.

3. Marquette ranks second in the Big East in scoring offense, averaging 76.5 points.

THE STORY:
No. 18 Marquette brings a five-game winning streak into Philadelphia when it faces  at noon Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. The Golden Eagles’ only Big East losses have been to Syracuse and Georgetown. The Wildcats have turned around their worst start in league history and have won two of their last three – letting a halftime lead slip away in a road loss to Louisville last time out. Three of Marquette’s four losses have been on the road. The Golden Eagles edged the Wildcats 81-77 on Jan. 1, behind a balanced scoring effort led by Darius Johnson-Odom’s 24 points.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN2, ESPN3.com

ABOUT MARQUETTE (17-4, 6-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles are a well-rounded bunch, with a potent offense and stingy defense. Different players represent Marquette among the league’s top five in scoring (Johnson-Odom, 18.1), field-goal percentage (Davante Gardner, 58.1), assists (Junior Cadougan, 5.6) and steals (Jae Crowder, 2.3). The Golden Eagles’ 76.3 points are second only to Syracuse’s 78, and their 17.5 assists are most in the league. They also harass opponents, ranking fifth in overall field-goal percentage defense and 3-point percentage defense.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (10-11, 3-6 Big East): The Wildcats were outscored by 15 in the second half of Wednesday’s 84-74 defeat at Louisville, after leading 44-39 at the break. Leading scorer Maalik Wayns (18.7 points) continued his recent hot stretch with a team-high 19 points, and has averaged 27.8 over his last four games since a woeful three-point night versus Syracuse on Jan. 11. James Bell, who averages 7.6 points, has reached double figures the last three games, including his first career double-double of 14 points and 13 boards against the Cardinals.

TIP-INS:

1. Marquette coach Buzz Williams collected his 100th victory with a 67-47 triumph over South Florida on Tuesday.

2. The Golden Eagles went to the foul line 13 times more than Villanova in their first meeting, but hit just 23 for 37.

3. Wayns and second-leading scorer Dominic Cheek combined for 18 points on 6-for-23 shooting (1-for-8 3-pointers) in the Jan. 1 game.

THE STORY: Marquette goes for its fifth straight win when it hosts surprising South Florida in a matchup of contrasting styles. The No. 18 Golden Eagles have two of the Big East’s top nine scorers in guard Darius Johnson-Odom (18.2 points per game) and forward Jae Crowder (16.3) and like to push the pace. They rank second in the conference in scoring (76.8). The Bulls prefer a much slower tempo. They rank last in the Big East in scoring (61.9) but allow the fewest points (57.7). Marquette leads the all-time series 16-3, winning 59-58 in Tampa last season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Big East Network (Sports 32, Milwaukee; Brighthouse, Tampa), ESPN3.com

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (12-8, 5-2 Big East):
The Bulls have won three straight and five of six thanks in large part to junior guard Jawanza Poland, who averaged 17.5 points in wins over St. John’s and DePaul. Coach Stan Heath likes to run isolation plays for Poland late in the shot clock. Forwards Augustus Gilchrist (11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds), Ron Anderson Jr. (8.8, 5.8) and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick (8.2, 6.8) are big reasons why South Florida has outrebounded its last six opponents.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (16-4, 5-2): The Golden Eagles nailed 9 of 11 from beyond the arc in Saturday’s 79-72 victory at Providence and are hitting a healthy 35.4 percent on 3-pointers. They are thriving offensively because of unselfishness; Marquette leads the Big East with 17.6 assists per game. Junior Cadougan has at least six assists in every Big East win. Moving the ball well is critical for this team, especially with starting center Chris Otule out for the season.

TIP-INS:

1. This is the Bulls’ best start in conference play since they joined the Big East in 2005-06.

2. Marquette sophomore forward Jamil Wilson played a career-high 33 minutes against Providence. He set career high with 16 points and seven rebounds.

3. Marquette coach Buzz Williams is going for his 100th career victory.

No. 22 Marquette travels to face struggling Providence

Marquette at Providence
When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, January 21, 2012
Where: Dunkin’ Donuts Center, Providence, Rhode Island

THE STORY: No. 22 Marquette looks to pick up its first Big East road win when it travels to face struggling Providence. The Golden Eagles have gone 4-0 at home in conference play but dropped their first two away games by a combined 10 points at then-No. 9 Georgetown and No. 1 Syracuse earlier this month. The Friars have lost five of six, including a 78-55 setback at Syracuse on Jan. 14.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sports32 (Milwaukee & Green Bay), SNY (New York, Hartford), MASN (Washington D.C.), Brighthouse (Tampa, Orlando), MASN (Baltimore), FS Ohio (Cincinnati), Time Warner (Buffalo), Cox (Providence), Time Warner (Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, Utica, Elmira, Watertown), WHVL (Johnston), ESPN Full Court, ESPN3.com

ABOUT MARQUETTE (15-4, 4-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles’ outside-inside combo of guard Darius Johnson-Odom (18.2 points) and senior forward Jae Crowder (16.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals) lead a balanced offense that is second in the Big East behind Syracuse in scoring (76.6 points) and leads the league in assists (17.4). Marquette is extremely disciplined considering its fast pace, ranking near the top of the conference in turnover margin (plus-3.8) and assist-turnover ratio (1.3). The Golden Eagles are 12-0 this season when junior point guard Junior Cadougan (5.4 assists) dishes out six or more assists.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (12-7, 1-5): The Friars rank among the Big East leaders in several defensive categories, including blocked shots (5.6, third) and opponent field goal percentage (39.4, fourth). The offense – 12th in the conference at 69.3 points – has been unable to produce consistently despite four players scoring in double figures, led by junior point guard Vincent Council (16.4 points, 7.1 assists off the bench) and sophomore guard Gerard Coleman (14.8 points). Freshman forward LaDontae Henton is fourth in the league with 8.9 rebounds per game.

TIP-INS:

1. Marquette leads the series 10-4, with an 8-1 mark against the Friars since joining the Big East.

2. The Golden Eagles won both meetings last season by more than 20 points, but its last trip to Providence resulted in a narrow 82-79 victory in February 2010.

3. Providence sophomore guard Bryce Cotton leads the Big East in free-throw percentage (90.0) and minutes played (37.9).

THE STORY:
No. 15 Louisville had lost four of five games, including a blowout loss to Providence, but thanks to Russ Smith (25 points) and Chris Smith (20 points) was able to bounce back with a victory over DePaul on Saturday. No. 24 Marquette, held off Pittsburgh, 62-57 in large part because of Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder’s combined 33 points. Monday’s matchup showcases the stingy defense of Louisville against the offensive juggernaut of Marquette.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (14-4, 2-3 Big East): The Cardinals have relied on their defense, which has allowed 60 points or less 12 times and is second in the Big East in field goal percentage defense. While the defense has been excellent, the offense has struggled as the Cardinals are 12th in the conference in field goal percentage (43 percent), with only Gorgui Dieng and Kyle Kuric shooting over 43 percent. Kuric and Russ Smith are the only players averaging double digits, at 13 and 11.4 points, respectively. Gorgui Dieng, just a sophomore, has been one of the Cardinals’ best all-around players, averaging 9.9 points, a team-high nine rebounds and adding a Big East leading 3.3 blocked shots.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (14-4, 3-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles have been one of the best scoring teams in the Big East (2nd at 76.8 points) and are led by Darius Johnson-Odom, who is second in the conference, averaging 18.1 points per game. Jae Crowder adds 16.3 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds, while shooting 51 percent from the field. Marquette’s been excellent distributing the ball as well and is tied with Syracuse for the conference lead in assists. Marquette is led by Junior Cadougan, who is handing out an average of 5.4 assists (fifth in the conference), including a career-high nine in the win over Pittsburgh.

TIP-INS:

1. Louisville won both meetings a year ago, including an 81-56 victory in the Big East Tournament.

2. Both teams are at the top of the conference in steals with Louisville second (9.7) and Marquette fourth (nine).

3. Four Louisville players have at least 20 assists, led by Peyton Siva (84). CLICK here to Place your College Basketball bets at Bovada
